White River, doorway to the Lowveld

Updated: Feb 5, 2019

Casterbridge, White River is at the doorstep to many of the Lowveld's famous attractions and an ideal base to start exploring.

Longtom Mountains

Welcome to the Lowveld, one of South Africa's top tourist spots and with good reason. This is after all the home of the Kruger National Park and the Panorama Route. White River is ideally located within the region. Many of the famous attractions are just a short drive away.

“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” - Helen Keller

Plant acceptance at the National Show will be on Tuesday and judging will only take place on Thursday with no stall building in between. That leaves at least an entire day in which to explore. Here are some ideas:

Take a drive....

Kruger's Numbi Gate is just around the corner. Seriously, you can be at the gate in under forty minutes and be well on your way to a Wimpy breakfast in Pretoriuskop Camp.

Hazyview is a bustling town on the way to Phabeni and Kruger Gates and offers many adventurous activities. Here you can interact with elephants, learn more about reptiles, go for a sky walk amongst the trees or simply relax in one of the restaurants at Perry's Bridge.

Graskop, Sabie, Longtom and Blyde offer a reprieve from the warmer climate but more importantly, offers some of the best views in the country. Here you may want to keep a look out for some indigenous orchids on the road embankments as this is an orchid hot-spot. Visit Graskop Gorge Lift and immerse yourself in an indigenous forest without breaking a sweat.

Nelspruit is the capital of Mpumalanga and has entertainment a plenty and is also the main shopping hub of the area. The botanical gardens holds a large collection of cycads and is definitely worth a visit too.

Kaapschehoop is another gem close to Nelspruit. The town has many walking trails, interesting brick-a-brack shops and quaint little restaurants. Here you can see lots of epiphytes in the trees growing in the rocky escarpment and hopefully a few early blooming terrestrial orchids too.

So, pack your bags and head to the Lowveld.
